about

“Thus I eat pink as I see sugary.”
- Jean-Paul Sartre, "Existentialism and Human Emotions"

this album was made as studies for an art installation by the photographer Julie Laing www.julielaing.com , the series called, Low-Sodium.
-------

experiments in orange light... trying to compose the color orange. what are its essential parts? Julie's photos are shot with a low-sodium lamp -- once common in urban areas -- its queazy, bold amber glow overwhelms all other colors. creating a total field of orange and yellow.

we hallucinate color. it is created by light colors which reflect back. and we assume light is pure, it tells the truth. but color is relative and contextual.

sensitive to the ambient tempterature, the lamp, once started, has to warm up over a period of about seven minutes.
The stages come in four parts:
1. pink and orange, tropical and florescent
2. it heats into a paternal yellow
3. finally, orange. a small sun
4. and then, the intensity of the orange increases until your vision goes spotty. overburned cones of your eyes fleck into green and you lose focus.

these compositions follow the arc of the sun: sunrise-zenith-sunset.
for the alchemists, there is much work to be done.

-------
his head turning into gold wasn't a dream, the daughter mentioned it during their walk through the woods.
the father and daughter moved to a desolate beach far in the north.
the mother is absent.
the father claims to be an alchemist, but he was a dancer.
the mother was the alchemist, and the father has only tried to decipher her notebooks, her diagrams, her coded handwriting.

she went too far And turned to gold.
the daughter remembers and she will become gold too.
the father, a shell... for a heavy mind, weighed down with the knowledge for creating gold from just a few, basic ingredients.
